TV companies in Europe lost €3.21 billion in 2021 because of people using illegal streaming sites to watch TV, that’s a number revealed by a study published by Bournemouth University. The researchers also estimate that the illegal providers made €1.06 billion from Europe in the same year – almost a fifth of which came from the UK. The study was commissioned by the Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance (AAPA) trade body which represents providers of internet protocol television (IPTV). The figures relate to the 27 EU countries and the UK. Any lost revenues by legitimate TV providers have the potential to affect their customers in the form of higher subscription prices, or through lower investment in new content and services. Countries’ economies can also be affected by lost tax income.

Christine Maury Panis is the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Public Affairs Viaccess-Orca. Prior to this role, Christine was legal counsel within the Thomson Consumer Electronics division from 1986 and was focused on the Pay TV activities within the IP section and their newly created licensing entity. Christine joined Viaccess in 2001 to create the legal and IP department and has been vice presiding the Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance, the successor to AEPOC (European Association for the Protection of Encrypted Works and Services) over the last ten years.
