SOLIDIFYING THE CLOUD: How Cloud Services are Maturing and Becoming Mainstream

September 2012
Cloud ComputingIT

Abstract

Some say that what is so incredible about the cloud computing phenomenon is the speed at which it has taken hold. What may be interesting to learn is that cloud computing was first mooted in the 1960’s as a concept based on utility, or grid computing. It was John McCarthy who said that ‘computation may someday be organized as a public utility’. It would however take until the late 1990s for the term ‘cloud computing’ to appear as a euphemism for such utility computing.

Senior Corporate Counsel, Hewlett Packard Limited, UK

I have spent most of the past 8 years working in the IT/ telecoms sector. I qualified in the United Kingdom in 2001 at what is now as DAC Beachcroft LLP. After spending 18 months working in Private Finance Initiatives, I made my first in house move to RBS Insurance. From the consumer facing insurance market I moved in 2005 to Cable & Wireless UK where I supported their carrier services business. In 2008 I became the first and sole lawyer in the UK at salesforce.com. It was the beginning of the cloud services phenomenom. During the four years that followed I supported an incredibly fast growing business and customer base. I regularly advised customer lawyers and procurement teams on the key issues of contracting for cloud services. I started an education program for such lawyers and procurement professionals to provide a forum to discuss the main issues associated with cloud computing services. I have spoken on this subject several times. In November 2011 I joined Hewlett Packard where I currently support their growing enterprise security businesses.
