Intellectual Property Rights: New Approach Supporting Farmers’ Rights

Abstract

Genetic diversity is and has been crucial for human survival and wellbeing. Plant genetic resources are of inestimable value to humankind. Since the beginning of agriculture, farmers, through careful selection and exchange of the best seeds and propagating material have developed and diversified food crops. With the years, initial crops and varieties evolved into the pool of plant genetic diversity that remains the basis of human food security. This diversity is a key resource for agriculture, enabling the adaptation of crops to unpredictable environmental changes and human needs. The rights of farmers, as the original developers and custodians of crop genetic diversity, need to be recognized and rewarded accordingly, in order that they may continue to play these vital roles.
