Canadian Policy and Corporate Governance Recommendations to Address the United States’ Tariffs
Abstract
Canada is one of the few countries in the world experiencing the most pronounced effects, including financial and job losses, of President Trump’s tariffs (i) upon exports of Canadian goods, including aluminum, steel, passenger vehicles, light trucks, automobile parts, and certain other goods, including energy, energy resources and potash; and (ii) likely to be imposed upon copper, timber, lumber, and other goods. The imposition of the above tariffs is illegal under the existing trade agreement that Canada has with the United States (including Mexico), agreed to in 2018. President Trump has threatened to use economic force to annex Canada. Such action is also illegal under the North Atlantic Treaty. President Trump has tariffed and threatened the territorial integrity of many and certain other countries, respectively, likely breaching their trading agreements and disrupting alliances.
